Osteopathy in the Cranial Field is essential for comprehensive pediatric care. Most of the common newborn issues from plagiocephaly, torticollis, reflux, colic and difficulty nursing have structural roots. Musculoskeletal strains on the newborn during delivery can cause problems throughout life. Recognizing and treating these dysfunctions in the immediate postpartum period is one of the most important phases of preventive medicine.
VMFrymann. All newborns deserve an osteopathic evaluation soon after birth.

Children and babies should be evaluated structurally, regularly as well as during periods of rapid growth, illness, and after any trauma. Issues in children such as autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, neurodevelopment issues, orthopedic conditions and scoliosis respond to osteopathic treatment. Osteopathic manipulative treatment offers children support to achieve their optimal potential.

This course is designed to inspire physicians regarding the often life changing benefits of osteopathic treatment in treating infants and children of all ages and offers tools to assist in their treatment. It will include a review of embryology, pediatric anatomy, normal developmental tasks of newborns, infants and children and the effects of birth trauma, sports injuries, and concussion. There will be an in-depth review of the structure and function of the three body systems most prone to clinical issues in children: the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system and neurological system, as well as discussion of normal structural development and the clinical significance of injuries.

What You Will Learn
• Learn one of the most primary life-saving osteopathic procedures for infants-helping them be able to successfully nurse and swallow
• How to evaluate infants for suck/swallow issues including lip, tongue and buccal cheek ties
• Understanding the anatomy related to breastfeeding, frenulums, facial and oromotor development
• The relationship between plagiocephaly, torticollis and tongue ties
